FREEDOM TREE 2072

I entered the Eco Active Challenge for young people and ended up winning in my age category.

Category 3 winner: ‘Freedom Tree 2072’– Matthew Brown

Exhibition Open from 14 to 15 May in Liberty Wharf in St. Helier, Jersey from 10.30am to 6pm.

The eco active team introduced the eco challenge to encourage young people to express their views on climate change. This was to allow young people to think creatively about the climate and biodiversity crises here in Jersey.

Young people were encouraged to think outside of the box and communicate using any visual or written medium. This included photography, painting, poetry, short stories and film.

CRITERIA

JUDGES

It is called “Freedom Tree 2072”, due to the rapidly increasing changing climate, I created an exaggeration of the future if rising heats are ignored. It is based off of the Freedom Tree in St. Helier, Jersey. The metal tree sculpture is in the middle of a forest fire. I wanted to show how the man-made, metal tree was not affected by the fire, compared to the burning natural forest around it. The CO2 gasses give the sky a hazed look, due to the smoke and burning forest. Hopefully, it can visualise the serious impact of climate change!
